About the Tour

The Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth

There are few sights in nature as humbling as a 15-metre, 30-ton humpback whale launching itself completely out of the ocean. And every year, between July and October, these magnificent creatures arrive in Mauritian waters after a 5,000-kilometre migration from Antarctica.

They come here to breed, give birth, and nurse their young in the warm, sheltered waters off the west coast. Our whale watching tours put you within safe viewing distance of these gentle giants, with a marine biologist on board to explain every behaviour and answer every question.

Drop the hydrophone into the water and listen to live whale songs — the haunting, complex vocalisations male humpbacks use to communicate across vast ocean distances. It is a deeply moving experience that connects you to the ocean in a way few people ever get to experience.

Whale Behaviours

What You Might Witness

Humpback whales are among the most acrobatic of all whale species. Here are the behaviours our guests most commonly experience during a tour.

Breaching

The most spectacular — a 30-ton whale launches its entire body out of the water and crashes back with an enormous splash. Breaching may be a form of communication, play, or parasite removal.

Tail Slapping

The whale repeatedly slaps its massive tail on the water surface, creating thunderous sounds that can be heard for kilometres. This is often a form of communication between whales.

Pec Slapping

The whale rolls onto its side and slaps its long pectoral fin against the water. These fins can reach 5 metres — nearly a third of the whale's body length.

Spy Hopping

The whale pokes its head vertically out of the water to take a look around. It is a curious, slow behaviour — like the whale is checking you out as much as you are checking them out.

Fluking

The whale raises its enormous tail flukes high above the water before a deep dive. Each humpback's tail pattern is unique — like a fingerprint — and researchers use fluke photos to identify individual whales.

Mother & Calf

Humpbacks come to Mauritius to give birth. Watching a mother gently guiding her calf to the surface to breathe is one of the most tender and moving wildlife encounters on the planet.

Whale behaviour is unpredictable — every tour is different. We follow strict international whale watching guidelines, maintaining a minimum 100m distance at all times.

Morning Itinerary

Your Whale Watching Adventure

A 4.5-hour morning expedition — enough time for multiple whale encounters while still leaving you the afternoon free.

07:00

Meet at West Coast Departure Point

Arrive at the meeting point on Mauritius' west coast. Meet your experienced crew and marine biologist guide, complete a safety briefing, and prepare for an unforgettable encounter with the giants of the ocean.

07:30

Departure — Into Deep Water

Head offshore into the migration corridor used by humpback whales. Your skipper navigates to known whale hotspots, scanning the horizon. The early morning light is perfect for photography and spotting whale spouts in the distance.

08:15

Whale Search & First Sightings

This is when the magic happens. The crew spots the first blow — a tower of mist shooting into the air — and guides the boat to a respectful distance. Watch in awe as 15-metre humpbacks surface, breach, and display their majestic presence.

09:00

Extended Whale Observation

Spend dedicated time observing multiple whales. You might see a mother teaching her calf to breach, a male performing spectacular jumps to impress females, or tail flukes rising high as a whale prepares for a deep dive. Drop the hydrophone to hear haunting whale songs.

10:00

Marine Life Exploration

While tracking whales, keep your eyes open for spinner dolphins, sea turtles, flying fish, and seabirds. The west coast of Mauritius is rich with marine life and every trip brings unique encounters.

11:30

Great trip overall. Saw one whale breach and several tail slaps. Only giving 4 stars because the sea was quite rough that day which limited our time. The crew handled it professionally though.
